Mentors will demonstrate leadership, planning, and other skills to develop a positive relationship with a mentee. The course is broken into two semesters (1 credit hour in the spring and 2 credit hours in the fall), and it can be used as a James Scholar Project for both of those semesters. Restriction(s): Restricted to Applied Health Sciences. Restricted to students with Junior or Senior class standing. Restricted to James Scholars Program students.

Having veterans on campus is an honor. The University recognizes the vast experiences and leadership that veterans bring from the military. For some returning veterans, going back to school can present unique challenges. There are many offices on campus and within the community that are designed to see veterans succeed. This course is designed for veterans who are freshman and transfer students to learn about assistive resources, gain practical skills that will support their transition to campus, reflect on their service history, and develop community. The objective of this course is to introduce military-connected students to the subject of career development and to provide strategies that enable them to land a career and succeed in the workplace. This course provides an overview of the civilian and federal job search process, resources for creating effective resumes and cover letters, interview preparation, job negotiations, professional networking and knowledge of various industries and organizations. Additionally, employee rights and benefits to include retirement programs will be discussed in detail, as well as tips for business-related functions, workplace challenges and situations, making sense of your paycheck, increasing your salary, and the importance of finding a mentor(s) early in your academic career. The military offers individuals an opportunity to gain a wide variety of skills, tools, and opportunities. While some of the things learned in the military will help service members to succeed in an academic setting, others might serve as barriers that create obstacles throughout their educational journey. To address this, this course was designed to assist students to translate their military experience and apply components of their service backgrounds in order to succeed in school (as well as at home, work, and other parts of their lives). The course will allow students to: 1) determine where they've come from; 2) be clear about where they're going; and 3) identify obstacles that might get in the way. It is recommended (but not required) that students take AHS 199 VT-VT2: Veterans Leadership & Transition and Career Development for Military Connected Students.
