This seminar will present a variety of approaches to "large n" and "large p" problems and will familiarize students with recent research that has used big data to push the cutting-edge of the applied economic fields. Through a combination of problem sets and independent projects, students will acquire the statistical and computational tools needed for making use of big data in empirical research. We will begin by learning about topics related to the design of randomized control trials, including power calculations, stratified randomization, spatial spillovers, random encouragement designs, measurement issues and the Hawthorne effect, selective trials, and pre-analysis plans.
