Section Title:
Saints,Lovers&Heroes in Poetry
Section Info:
Topic: Saints, Lovers, & Heroes in Persian Poetry. Same as CWL 199 The instructor: Dr. Richard (Dick) Davis is Emeritus Professor of Persian at Ohio State University and is a George A. Miller Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Spring 2016 at UIUC. Professor Davis is a stellar scholar and expert translator of classical Persian poetry and is a poet in his own right. He manages to translate classical Persian poetry into beautiful English poetry, without losing any of the flavor and idiom of the original Persian—quite a difficult task. The course: Persian has one of the great literatures of the world and is really worth getting to know for anyone who cares even the tiniest bit about literature. We shall sample the major genres of Persian poetry – epic, romance, mystical verse, lyric verse – and spend 15 weeks in the company of characters who are utterly different from us in some ways and startlingly like us in others.
