Section Title:
Agriculture Evolving
Section Info:
In the coming years agriculture will have to adapt to multiple converging challenges: increasing climate extremes and water scarcity, increasing carbon costs, loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the emergence of pesticide/herbicide resistance in pests and weeds. The recent book by R. Ford Denison, Darwinian Agriculture, “shows how both biotechnology and traditional plant breeding can use Darwinian insights to identify promising routes for crop genetic improvement and avoid costly dead ends.” This 10-week graduate-level seminar will be organized around readings and discussion from this book, and additional readings to help situate the crop-level focus of the book into a broader agroecosystem context. Guest faculty presenters will include Ford Denison, Gary Nabhan and others.
