In collaboration with the Innovation Immersion Program (IIP) and Illinois Business Consulting (IBC), students will participate in actual project engagements from US and international clients. Students who are selected for this course will become members of the Business Intelligence Group (BIG), and they play critical roles in secondary research and analysis. Furthermore, students are also expected to participate in the entire engagement cycle from client development to final project presentation. The course will offer knowledge and training to help students understand the basics of consulting engagements as well as problem-solving and analytical skills. This seminar will be an examination of socio-technical studies, with a particular emphasis on two themes: 1. investigating emerging information technologies and discussing how socio-technical approaches might productively approach their study, and 2. examining socio-technical studies as a field of inquiry and asking how it might be theoretically or methodologically extended. Feminist and critical race theory, social constructionist theory and complexity theory and their relationship to socio-technical systems approaches will be examined, and students will be expected to critically examine a variety of methodological approaches and consider their applicability to socio-technical research projects. It is surprising then that we understand so little about what these things really are. As the world of digital information systems becomes increasingly formal and rigorous this lack of understanding creates problems for the design of systems and services. To prepare us for addressing these problems, this course explores the fundamental nature of the key entities in our field. The method of approach will be conceptual analysis and formal ontology. The course will be conducted as an advanced seminar. Although there are no specific prerequisites, students should be comfortable learning and using formal languages. After that idea has gelled into a working concept, it is handed to Design and Installation Specialists to see what is really possible. Can we have all the art suspended from wires? Can the ceiling support a replica of a sea mine? Can we devise a secure vitrine for this priceless manuscript? Does this meet ADA restrictions? How will everything fit together? Can we get that look? This course will address how exhibitions attains a specific "look"? This is not a course on developing or curating the information, but rather a course on presenting that information in the most compelling way. We will look at the planning, fabricating, painting, building, and installing are large parts of our work. We also have to consider that nothing, with few exceptions, is permanent. Our work needs to be secure and stable, but also reversible to make way for the next show. We will also survey the conceptual and procedural dimensions of carrying an exhibition through from curatorial musings to the reality of opening night. We will cover the techniques and processes that begin with a dialogue and move into the concrete. We will discuss the "what's possible" response to the initial idea. We will discuss the collaborative aspects of working with Curators, Directors of Cultural Institutions, Registrars, Collections Managers and Architects. It will look at some of the most famous types of illuminated manuscripts, including Bibles, Books of Hours and literary texts. It will explain how to identify texts and fragments, how to read and date medieval scripts, and how to gain access to original manuscripts across the world. It will look at the market for medieval manuscripts, both in the Middle Ages and today, and it will discuss manuscript libraries and collectors. The course will include ample access to original medieval manuscripts, and practical work involving actual examples from at least the eleventh century to the renaissance. Topics include prediction markets, games with a purpose, open source software development, social media, social networks, information visualization, and online games. Second, socio-technical aspects of the design and usage of respective technologies. This includes participation, privacy and security. Students learn how to solve problems in social computing in a systematic and rigorous fashion.
