Section Title:
Masters Persian Classical Poet
Section Info:
Topic: 'Masters of Persian Classical Poetry'. Meets with SAME 490 AG. Section Info The instructor: Dr. Richard (Dick) Davis is Emeritus Professor of Persian at Ohio State University and is a George A. Miller Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Spring 2016 at UIUC. Professor Davis is a stellar scholar and expert translator of classical Persian poetry and is a poet in his own right. He manages to translate classical Persian poetry into beautiful English poetry, without losing any of the flavor and idiom of the original Persian, quite a difficult task. The course: We shall look at short poems and excerpts from long poems by the acknowledged masters (and a few mistresses) of Persian poetry. We shall read the poems in Persian, and if you can read Persian - middling competence will be enough - the instructor promises you a feast of a course. Don’t worry if you can’t speak Persian very well, English will do for discussion as long as you can read the texts. Restriction(s) Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
