Advanced reporting projects or techniques, with separate sections for a varying array of topics such as investigative reporting, immersion journalism, literary journalism, business and financial journalism, online publishing, radio news features, sports writing, broadcast documentary production, digital journalism, and photo journalism.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters if topics vary. Prerequisite: JOUR 210.

TOMORROW’S NEWS TODAY: EDITING FOR SOCIAL AND DIGITAL MEDIA Pre-requisite: JOUR 210, with JOUR 320, JOUR 335 or equivalent preferred Hands-on practicum in social media while working as editors for experimental, interdisciplinary project with local news organizations to research, create and implement new social media strategies that target key demographics and seek to increase audience habituation and engagement. Includes extensive practice evaluating postings in addition to brainstorming, analyzing and working hands-on as social media coordinators. Designed in consultation with Top 10 newspaper where instructor was visiting professor of social media this summer. May also include introduction to digital publishing skills, including HTML5, CSS3, content management systems, interactivity and non-linear storytelling. Students with less journalistic experience should register under MDIA 290.
