FR 579 Seminar in French Literature Classique/moderne: Theater in French from the 17th to the 21st Century The goal of this seminar is the critical examination of a genre and its evolution over five centuries. The object of our case study will be theater in French from Pierre Corneille to Wajdi Mouawad. "Classique" and "moderne" as aesthetic categories, as common as they are complicated, will serve us to critically frame our exploration of individual plays, their historical contexts, and in some cases, recent stagings: what makes a play a classic? Can a classic drama be modern and how? Should it? How useful is the dichotomy of "classique" vs. "moderne", and what falls outside of it? We will discuss these and related questions through the close study of plays in French, theoretical readings about theater from different periods, and recorded stagings of select dramas on the program. Texts by Corneille, Racine, Molière; Beaumarchais, Musset, Jarry; Vinaver, Koltès, Ndiaye, Reza, and Mouawad. Readings and class discussion in French.
