Study of specific relations between authors of different countries; influences of certain works, concepts, or tastes on another work, author, or country; and literary interaction between Eastern and Western cultures. Emphasis changes from term to term.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 or 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 9 undergraduate hours or 12 graduate hours. Prerequisite: One year of college literature or consent of instructor.

Description: This course offers an introduction to translation theory, with an emphasis on literary translation as a cross-cultural activity. In-depth readings of key theoretical texts will be supplemented by practical training in literary translation. Advanced knowledge of one language besides English, equivalent to at least three years of coursework at the college level, is prerequisite. Requirements include regular attendance, reading of assignments, class participation, journal entries, oral presentations, and a translation project.
