Section Title:
The Animal Self
Section Info:
A selection of literary texts from Greece, Rome, and the subsequent Western tradition in which animals are either protagonists or narrators. Recurring themes include: identity, boundaries and their transgression, reason and language, emotions and desire. Readings include selections from Homer’s Odyssey, Plutarch’s Gryllos, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Apuleius’ Golden Ass, Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty, Jack London’s Call of the Wild, Richard Adams’ Watership Down. We conclude by looking beyond the Western tradition to Native American texts, including Louise Erdrich’s The Antelope Wife.

This class studies attitudes toward same-sex desire, love, and relationships in Greece and Rome from Homer to Late Antiquity, as well as its reception in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and beyond. A wide variety of texts in ancient poetry and prose in translation are selected for reading.
