Section Info:
Topic: Translating Culture and Everyday Life: US and China - CHIN 490 - develops language and translation skills for intermediate to advanced learners of English and Mandarin who wish to hone their written and spoken language skills. CHIN 490 engages students in meaningful dialogue on a broad selection of subjects about both cultures, such as politics, economy, media, poverty, high technology, social networks, education, religion, dating and marriage through discussions based on readings and film clips in both target languages. One class meeting per week will be conducted in Mandarin, and the other in English, so that learners of both languages will have the opportunity to develop their skills while working cooperatively in a bilingual setting. CHIN 490 will allow students to deepen their understanding of the cultural and linguistic contexts of China and the US, while simultaneously exploring the intricate connections and interdependence between the two countries in the global world.
