Section Title: Algorithmic Genomic Biology Part of Term: 1 Section Info: Course description: This course covers four fascinating and related problems: constructing evolutionary trees, computing multiple sequence alignments, genome assembly, and analyzing microbiomes. Students will learn the mathematical and computational foundations in these areas, read the current literature, and do a team research project. The techniques involved include discrete algorithms, graph theory, simulations, and probabilistic analysis of algorithms. The course is appropriate for graduate students in computer science, computer engineering, bioengineering, mathematics, and statistics; graduate students in the biological sciences are also welcome, and will have different homework and exams. Pre-requisites: No biology background is required, but students should have some mathematical maturity, and at least one undergraduate course in algorithm design, data structures, or probability theory. Students without this background (e.g., biology graduate students, or undergraduates in engineering who have not completed an algorithms course) may be admitted, but should contact the instructor to discuss the course.

Imaging & Therapeutic Agents
Section Info:
This course will introduce the principles and prerequisites for clinical (MRI, CT, US, PET-SPECT) and pre-clinical (PAT, Optical) imaging modalities and chemical strategies to develop exogenous probes for the early detection of molecular changes responsible for disease pathogenesis such as cardiovascular, inflammatory, cancer and neurological disorders. We will also discuss in depth the strategies for site-specific delivery of therapeutic agents (chemotherapeutic, thrombolytic, and biologics) with biochemically triggered release mechanisms. The course is designed to teach various aspects of translational medicine from imaging and therapeutic standpoint. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of various clinical and preclinical imaging modalities, prerequisites for developing probes for these modalities, their application in current clinical practice, and preclinical development in various animal models of cancer, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. We will also explore therapeutic approaches (chemo- and biologics) to these diseases and identify opportunities for personalized preemptive medicine. The course is uniquely tailored for students interested in interdisciplinary translational research with direct clinical focus.

Systems Bioengineering
Section Info:
Systems Biology and Bioengineering are emerging fields that require new minds that are adept in integrating biology with mathematics and computation. In this course you will receive training in bimodal systems biology: (1) Translating experimental observations to mathematical representations. (2) Deterministic network model development, mathematical solution techniques, simulation, and prediction. These approaches will be presented in the context of tumor angiogenesis. Here students will examine the angiogenic signaling pathways, and apply systems biology and bioengineering approaches to design new therapeutics targeting tumor vasculature. **Pre-reqs: MCB 150 and one of the following courses: BIOE 201, CHBE 221, or TAM 210/212.
