This course examines the major themes related to Brazilian culture, specifically Brazilian cultural production through music, with an emphasis on the 20th century. In a country with such a strong oral tradition, musical expression has played an important role in addressing national and regional culture, both inside and outside of the country. We will explore different genres that have shaped what we today know as MPB (Brazilian Popular music), the festivals era, the bossa nova heritage, Clube da Esquina, tropicalismo, novos baianos, plus northeast artists among others. Listening and interpreting improve your acquisition of the Portuguese language in a number of ways. Students will engage with a variety of texts in research, and have an extensive experience with Portuguese language and culture. Taught in Portuguese.
