Topic Title: Culture and Power in Brazil This course introduces Brazilian genres of art, music, dance, photography, television, and theatre, including Oswald de Andrade’s “Cannibalist Manifesto,” the tropicalista musical movement, samba, capoeira, as well as the telenovela (akin to the US American soap opera), among others. Using insights from anthropology, history, sociology, as well as media and performance studies, we will explore how these forms of cultural expression have reflected and shaped class, gender, nation-making, modernity, race, sexuality, and other axes of power. Our goal is to explore how genres of elite and popular culture subvert, maintain, and disrupt dominant norms and hierarchical relations. TAUGHT IN PORTUGUESE
