Section Title:
History of Philosophy
Section Info:
In this course we will read Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgment with a focus on two main topics. The first will be Kant’s conception of judgment as an exercise of cognitive faculties (of the understanding and of the power of judgment). This will require looking back at Kant’s discussion of judgment in the first Critique and in his logic lectures. Our guiding questions in this section of the course are as follows: how can aesthetic and teleological judgments be considered ‘judgments’ in Kant’s sense? Does an aesthetic judgment have a logical form? The second topic will concern Kant’s overall project in the third Critique of bridging the gap between nature and freedom, or between theoretical and practical employments of reason. How does pleasure in the beautiful provide a sensible presentation of the transition from nature to freedom? And why does the possibility of realizing freedom in nature lead Kant to think of the whole of nature as a system of purposes?
