Field Experience

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 1 OR 2 hours.

Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

58305	Laboratory-Discussion	AFR	8:00AM -11:00AM	S	Turner Hall	Nelson, S Jones, T	Part of Term: A Date Range: 08/22/16-10/14/16 Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Avian Field Research Section Info: This is a practical course on field research, whose primary purpose is to provide firsthand experience in conducting all aspects of a science project outside of controlled laboratory settings. The course will focus on birds, with the secondary purpose of exposing students to a variety of common field techniques and giving in depth training in banding and radio telemetry. These are marketable job skills that are often required or preferred in today's wildlife job market. This class will meet at the Anita Purves Nature Center, (1505 N. Broadway in Urbana). Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Fisheries Field Techniques Section Info: The objective of this course is to provide students with hands-on experience and training in standard methods and techniques used by fisheries scientists. This objective will be accomplished through a combination of field- and laboratory-based learning modules where students will learn collection techniques, data analysis methods and report writing. By the conclusion of the course, students will have an improved understanding of project design, data collection/management and field applications. Students will be required to take one (1) off-site Saturday field trip during to a fisheries field station during this course, date to be determined (most likely the third or fourth Saturday in September). This section is restriction to NRES majors only. It is restricted to seniors through April 15, when it will be opened to junior NRES majors, as well. 56368	Laboratory	SBF	2:00PM -5:00PM	M	Turner Hall	Happel, A	Part of Term: A Date Range: 08/22/16-10/14/16 Section Fee: ACES Field Trip $70.00 Flat Fee. Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Stream Bioassessment Field Exp Section Info: Through this course students will be exposed to: 1) abiotic factors of a stream, 2) how these factors can affect biotic communities, and 3) macroinvertebrate classification and sampling methods. The course follows the EPA Water Quality Monitoring volunteer program and will culminate with a study of various nearby stream locations. As such, students will gain hands on experience associating stream communities to stream conditions through the use of diversity indices, biotic integrity calculations, and abiotic data. The course will culminate in a written report of the findings at each stream and a discussion of the differences between locations.
