This course explores developments in Hollywood cinema from 1950 to the present, examining those from key film studies approaches such as authorship, genre, narrative conventions, film style, gender analysis. contextualized within moments of major transition in the American film industry, e.g., the phenomenon of “Hitchcock in American Culture,” “The New Hollywood,” and “Hollywood in a Global Context.” Requirements include lab viewing and discussion of a weekly feature film, two essays, and a final. Engl/MACS 273 counts as an elective for English and cinema studies majors and minors, but offers all students on campus interested in the subject the opportunity to engage in small classroom discussion led by regular faculty and to benefit from the course’s attention to improving student writing.
