Digital Humanities
Section Info:
In this course, we will examine applications of digital technology in the humanities, and the implications of such projects for libraries — which are often centrally involved both in supporting the research and in collecting its results. "Digital humanities" will cover a broad range of topics, from new subjects of research (like video games and social media) to new research methods (like computational exploration of digital libraries). As a final project, each student will choose one digital humanities project and write a review essay about it, intended for publication. You may need to consult with people involved in creating the project; in your review, you'll discuss the project's intended audience and use, its technical choices, and its plans (if any) for documenting the research process and preserving research products.

Section Info:
[Expanded title: Information Transfer & Collaboration in Science] This seminar examines the role of information in the production of scientific knowledge. Building on a foundation of classic readings in the history and sociology of science, the course will cover a range of contemporary research on scientific communication, collaboration, research practice, and informatics. The focus is on formal and informal information transfer and communication, both amongst scientists and between scientists and external stakeholders (such as industry partners, policymakers, and members of the public), as a social phenomenon and implications for collaborative science and e-science. The course had been developed as part of the master's degree in bioinformatics and is also suited for doctoral students and advanced master's students interested in professional development as science and medical information specialists.

Oral history is a method of documenting recent history through recorded interviews. This course surveys the theory and practice of oral history as a means to supplement the historical record, with an emphasis on the intersection between library science and oral history. Students interested in public history, archives, or simply curious about oral history will enjoy the class. Students will design and conduct an oral history project from start to finish. Each student will create a project statement, then select a narrator, prepare, conduct, transcribe, and process an audio recorded interview. Students will apply the methodology we learn in class to their oral history project.

Funding projects through grants and planned giving has become essential to the growth of non-profits, including libraries. Increasingly staff members are called upon to demonstrate fund development skills, locate funding sources, and prepare grant proposals. Participants will focus on resources for finding funders, preparing standard and government grant requests, and initiating other fund development activities. There will be ample opportunity to exchange information and translate ideas into effective proposals.
