Cultural Landscapes of India: The course fulfills the requirement of non-western cultures in General Education and is an introduction to cultures and societies of India through the medium of landscapes. Religions, mythologies, caste structure, colonialism, and contemporary life will be studied as spatial practices that shape landscapes. The focus will be on forms and meanings of pilgrim sites, vernacular housing, traditional settlements, streetscapes, and parks. We will investigate how modern India preserves its rich cultural heritage, memorializes its rebellions and great leaders, and promotes social equity and public health in its public spaces. You will write short essays on landscape representations in art, films, and other texts, participate in the South Asian events held in campus, and develop a sustainable approach to planning public spaces in Indian cities.
