SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Surveys the three major East Asian civilizations from ancient and classical times, through the period of Western influence, political revolution, and modernization, to the contemporary age and the emergence of East Asian superpowers.

Same as EALC 120. Credit is not given for both HIST 120 and EALC 135.

Section Info: This course provides a survey of the past four centuries of East Asian history from the political and economic heights of the Qing empire in China, the Choson dynasty in Korea, and the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan through the turbulent decades of imperialism, colonialism, nationalism, and industrialization to the region's resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s. To help make sense of this long and complex history, the course is subdivided into the following four chronological units: Era of Growth ad Stability; the Nineteenth-Century Transformation; Alternate Modernities; and the Postwar, Cold War, and Beyond. Across these four periods, you will encounter a variety of historical sources that introduce you to all manner of people - the high, the low, women, men, outcastes, foreigners, and ethnic minorities. The sum of these voices and experiences should provide you with a broad understanding of people's experiences in early modern and modern East Asia. This knowledge will also help you compare, contrast, and draw connections between the past and present in China, Japan, and Korea. Through section-based discussions and assignments as well as short essays and preparation for the unit exams, you will also learn and develop the skills, knowledge, and values needed to succeed as an informed and educated member of society in the twenty-first century.
