Theories of Citizenship
Section Info:
This class analyzes contemporary citizenship by engaging scholars informed by feminist, queer, and disability studies. We will begin by considering exclusions embedded in the very form of citizenship that remain durable even as formal bars to inclusion are lifted. Most centrally, we will consider how “abstract masculinity” organizes citizenship in modern democracies. We will then explore how the category of citizenship might be organized differently, focusing on theories in which the affective attachments, capacities, or practices of the citizen are gendered feminine. To evaluate what might be desirable, problematic, or otherwise interesting about “feminizing” citizenship we will consider how these theories take up issues such as dependency, embodiment, care and care-work, and vulnerability.
