Seminars introduce students to aspects of globalization through a case study of a particular location abroad. On campus, students explore historical and contemporary aspects of the location abroad to prepare for their field visit. Abroad, students engage with local resources and people to better understand how the local site contributes to and is impacted by relevant global processes under focus. Course activities will include a field site visit abroad, discussions, lectures, short essays, student presentation, and final projects. You will study at the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI), one of the premier field schools and biological research stations in the Caribbean. CEI is the ideal location from which to approach the rich biology, history, and social complexity of the Bahamas, and the challenges to human life on island ecosystems where resources, such as freshwater and agricultural products, are limited. The framework of sustainability thus provides the context through which you will seek to understand the many challenges that face the inhabitants of Cape Eleuthera. The seminar will combine class lectures and discussions, cultural immersion, and considerable on-the-ground interaction with scholars, activists, and politicians in two distinct regions in Argentina: Las Pampas, including the city of Buenos Aires and its surrounding areas and Mesopotamia, the northeast section of Argentina located between two major rivers, the Parana and Uruguay. S Africa Cape Town
Section Info:
Globalization and Urban Inequalities in Cape Town, S Africa. In this course, you will explore how current policies of neoliberal globalization shape and are shaped by social hierarchies and spatial segregation at the city scale. Specifically, we will explore how global econmic policies and processes are re-articulating Cape Town’s segregated residential landscape of rich, white urban suburbs and poor, black peri-urban townships. This course will appeal to students of urban sociology, geography, anthropolgy, political science and urban planning interested in the relation between spatial practices and struggles for racial, gender and class justice. Class will meet in Room 19 in Temple Buell Hall (TBH) Registration is restricted until students have been accepted into the program by the Study Abroad Office.
