This course examines the layered architectural heritage of Mediterranean cities, traceable in both visible historic fabric and underlying patterns of space and use in order to look at how the urban morphologies of the Middle Ages shaped the cities we know today. Through investigation of various cities around the Mediterranean, including Cordoba, Rome, Palermo, Cairo, Istanbul, Jerusalem, and Nicosia, we will seek to understand the cities’ urban development and architectural history in relation to how and why past monuments, urban spaces, and infrastructural fabric (walls, water supply, streets) were formed in the past, how their remains are used today, and how meaning can be created from architectural heritage in both the past and the present.
