Section Info:
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with classical ethical theories through film. Class time will be divided between lecture, viewing films, and discussing films in the context of the theories studied. Most of the course will be spent examining various accounts of moral obligation, such as religion, relativism and self-interest, with a particular focus on utilitarianism and deontology. We will also survey more familiar moral issues, for example the permissibility of abortion, punishment, and torture, and obligations to protect the environment. Students will be required to participate in class discussions, write two short papers and take a final exam.
