Inventing a Golden Age: Contemporary Film Representations of the Spanish Empire The first half of this course explores how contemporary film representations of the Spanish Golden Age (1492-1700) have been produced and consumed in Spain, beginning with the Spanish civil war and the subsequent Franco regime and continuing through contemporary Spain. The second half of the course looks beyond Spain and explores how the early modern Spanish Empire has served to reflect (and deflect) contemporary issues in different contexts, such as the immigration debates in the US, or the debates about sexual and civil rights in the European Union. The course will focus mainly on film representations, complemented with the reading of theoretical, literary, journalistic, and tourist documents. Students will learn to analyze cultural, visual, and literary representations of the past, and will also have the opportunity to learn the basics for creating presentations with audiovisual materials. Reading knowledge of Spanish is required. The course will be in Spanish, although individual accommodations may be arranged for non SIP students.
