Music and Performance

Credit: 3 hours.

Examination of one or more aspects of musical performance defined by historical era, region, genre, philosophy, etc. Can include the study of the relationship between performance, improvisation and creative process; performance and publication; performance practices of a specific genre, period, or community; etc.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, junior standing; or consent of instructor.

From traditional ensembles to new multimedia works, we will consider music?s role(s) across diverse performances. On some occasions we will be able to interact directly with the artists. Each event will spawn topics and point to developments in the arts that we will pursue further. Students will choose and purchase tickets for five performances (student-rate price = $10 each, no other costs are involved), each of which will be the subject of a written position paper. Class preparation will consist of selected readings and directed online research. During the last few weeks of the semester, students will develop projects focused on performance seasons at other venues or the recent performance trajectory of an artist or group of artists. Project presentations (c. 20 minutes) take place at the end of the semester. No mid-term or final exam is involved. Restriction(s): Restricted to students in the Music department.
