Adv Digital & Spatial Studies
Section Info:
This course covers advanced topics in geographic information systems and science, a rapidly growing field. It is intended to familiarize students with GIS literature and the state of the art GIS technologies and applications. The course will be held primarily in a discussion format combined with hands-on and writing projects. One tour of cutting-edge GIS facilities within the CyberGIS Center for Advanced Digital and Spatial Studies (http://cybergis.illinois.edu/) and/or NCSA (http://www.ncsa.illinois.edu/) is also planned. Each student is encouraged to investigate a topic of the student?s own interest.

Section Title:
Recent Advances in GIS
Section Info:
LOCATION - 229 CAB. Recent developments in geographic information science often provide new and important insights to many analytical problems geographers face in their research. As these advances have considerable potential to inform the development of new geographic methods and concepts, they have important implications for geographic and health research. This course introduces students to some of the most innovative advances in GIScience that are particularly relevant to geographic studies of a wide variety of topics in population and health research, urban and economic geography, transportation, land use/land cover change, environmental studies, crime studies and other areas. Topics covered in the seminar include: integration of the spatial and temporal dimensions in geographic analysis (space-time integration), three-dimensional geovisualization methods, geocomputation, geosimulation, agent-based modeling, the collection and analysis of GPS data, qualitative GIS methods for mixed-method research, critical GIS, and network-based GIS methods. Students are encouraged to develop a project to examine a particular issue in applying GIS in their own research.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
