Examines the foundational documents of francophone theory and literature. Beginning with theory we will read Csaire, Memmi and Fanon, for an understanding of the theory that constitutes the base structure of many post-colonial literary works from the French Caribbean, West Africa and North Africa. Films will also be shown in conjunction with certain works, as francophone cinema of the era also provides a crucial insight into post-colonial production. It is the aim of this course to show how the 'real-time' historical and political realities of the post-colonial era are represented in literature and film. The course will be conducted entirely in French, the readings will be in French and the assignments will be written in French.
