Meets with CHBE 594 CVR. This course will teach students how to solve chemical engineering problems using computational tools. Topics covered will include mathematical modeling, optimization, probability, and statistics as applied to problems in chemical process design and analysis. Students will learn how to program using the MATLAB programming environment.

Meets with CHBE 594 HY. This course will introduce the concepts related to the fundamentals and practical methods for the preparation of nanostructured materials. Principles on nucleation and growth and related subjects of interfacial science, crystal structure and essential characterization techniques will be covered. The main emphasis of the course will be the approaches to non-hydrolytic synthesis of uniform and monodispersed nanoparticles, i.e. the control of size, shape, facet, and structure of nanomaterials. The type of nanomaterials include the semiconducting quantum dot, metal, metal oxide and metal alloy nanoparticles. Other related topics include self-assembled nanomaterials, heterogeneous nanostructures, templating approaches and basics of gas-phase synthesis.
