Greening Art History
Section Info:
Topic: Greening Art History. This course considers several Chinese and Japanese artistic traditions from the perspective of sustainability, such as Chinese ritual bronzes, Japanese wood-fired ceramics, and Chinese and Japanese gardens. During the first part of the semester, we shall read, research, and write about sustainability topics, in particular our role as consumers and the production cycles of the things we consume. In the next part of the course, we shall consider the social and environmental effects of the historical production of things in China and Japan. Finally, we shall work in groups to design a sustainable garden in a Chinese style that suits the environment of Champaign-Urbana.
