Section Info:
This course traces African American Theatre from enslavement to the contemporary moment as entertainment and as a tool for effecting social change, healing, and challenging stereotypes. We will explore African American Theatre both as an extension of precolonial African theatre and performance traditions and as a major component of and contribution to the development of US American Theatre. Using published and unpublished plays, films, and documentaries we will examine theatrical representations of African Americans as well as performance themes and aesthetics within their social, cultural and historical contexts.
