Section Title:
Filipina/o Americans
Section Info:
This course serves as an introduction to the study of Filipina/o Americans from an interdisciplinary perspective. It will provide important historical background in Philippine history under the Spanish and United States empires and the post-colonial Philippine nation. It will track the various migration flows and streams of Filipinas/os to the United States in the last two centuries. Despite being the second largest Asian minority group in the United States, the stories of Filipino-Americans are often obscured and misrepresented in the fabric of American society. The course will explore key concepts of diaspora, globalization, transnationalism, and labor and how they have affected Filipina/o Americans. Finally, the course will examine how the community engages with popular culture practices (sports, music, dance) as important sites for Filipina/o American identity formations.
