Teaching Ferguson: Urbanization and Social Justice Struggles in Segregated Cities Worldwide. This course will explore cities as sites of social injustice. Readings will reveal how urbanization processes have led to segregation of cities worldwide. Students will talk and walk with residents of marginalized neighborhoods worldwide?virtually and in person?to learn how they protest urban injustices by occupying public spaces, and how they offer new ways of managing common urban resources and services such as public schools, libraries and parks. Field expeditions will include resident-led walking tours of Champaign-Urbana and Ferguson, MO. Virtual tours will explore online video and audio archives of urban protests in post-apartheid Cape Town, South Africa; Staten Island in New York, Gezi Park in Istanbul, and Tahrir Square in Cairo.
