TOPIC TITLE: "Understanding Contemporary Brazil" taught in Portuguese. This course offers a broad introduction to aspects of modern Brazilian culture and society. Students will engage with a variety of written and visual materials ? including literature, journalism, and film ? to improve understanding of the contemporary Brazilian context. While the topics covered will vary depending on student interest and familiarity with Brazil, probable themes include race/race relations, politics, economics/development, sport, human rights, migration, gender, and the environment, among others. As a language course, assignments and in-class participation will focus on improving oral competency, enhancing reading comprehension, and developing writing skills.
