This course will cover the theory and practice that underpin ecological soil management to support organic and sustainable farming systems. It will explore why and how the concept of soil health and its stewardship is the foundation of organic and sustainable production. This blended course curricula draws on materials (including system planning tools and strategies; research/practice reviews; and farm case studies, topical articles, videos, and webinars) using farmer and researcher strategies, data, and experiences. The class will draw heavily upon farm case studies and content developed for the eOrganic.community of practice that is part of the National eXtension wesite.

THE POLITICS OF INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT: The problem of how to conserve the earth?s rich biological heritage while enhancing the well-being of some of the world?s poorest people stands as a critical global challenge. This course will examine this complex issue using the lens of political science and related cross-cutting fields such as political ecology and common property. It will demonstrate how insights and approaches from these areas of scholarship can help understand and address the twin problems of biodiversity loss and human poverty in the countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Examples will be drawn from these three geographic areas focusing on forest and wildlife conservation and management.

This asynchronous course examines the human dimensions of non-native plants and animals in the United States, from 19th-century invasions by insect pests to the current furor about Asian carp in the Midwest. Historical, social, economic, political, and ethical aspects of the invasive species phenomenon are examined through readings and hands-on activities.
