Section Info:
Topic: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Life Sciences: Autism. This Grand Challenge Learning experience course is part of a 3-year pilot and is certified for General Education credit for Life Sciences. The course provides an introduction to the complex issues involved in understanding developmental disorders through a focus on autism, a diagnosis currently given to 1 out of every 68 children in the United States (Center for Disease Control & Prevention, 2014). The course will integrate first-person narratives and perspectives from various fields to address such questions as: What is autism? What is neurodiversity? How might studying autism help you better understand yourself and those around you? As an interdisciplinary approach to education within the life sciences, this course will examine the genetic, environmental, neurobiological, cognitive, and behavioral features associated with autism, while also acknowledging the social-cultural lens through which such factors are examined.
