Graduate Seminar in Ecology
Section Info:
1 hours. Graduate Seminar in Ecology. Topic: Ecology of Infectious Diseases We will address the ecological factors that govern the transmission of vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens and parasites. Readings will be selected from current topics in disease ecology that highlight the: role of pathogens and parasites within food webs, effects of ecosystem change on infectious disease emergence, importance of mathematical ecology in predicting infectious disease dynamics, and future frontiers in disease ecology. Responsibility for leading discussion will rotate among the seminar participants and papers will be selected in consultation with the instructor. MEETS IN 515 MORRILL HALL.

Graduate Seminar in Genomics
Section Info:
1 hour. Topic: Graduate Seminar in Genomics. This seminar will first address the basics of genomics, that is, how genomes are sequenced, assembled, annotated, and analyzed. Supporting approaches such as transcriptomics and epigenomics will be explored to see how they add value to a genome sequence, and allow understanding of its expression in space and time. Examples from across the spectrum of life will illustrate the use of comparative genomic approaches from phyla to populations. Specific applications to topics such as speciation, global climate change, and personal genomics will be explored. MEETS IN 515 MORRILL HALL

It will cover the book ?The Analysis of Biological Data? by Whitlock and Schluter who created a website with R code to accompany the book. It will also use ?The R Graphics Cookbook?. Students will be assigned weekly problem sets to be performed in R and will share their R-code and show how they solved problems. Weekly quizzes will occur on the assigned reading. This seminar will continue in Spring 2016 to complete the book. Students enrolled in the fall need not enroll in spring. Students must bring their own laptops to class.
