Topic Section G: Green Women: Women and Ecology in Literature and Culture Rachel Carson?s 1962 book Silent Spring is sometimes said to have launched the environmental movement in the United States. Beginning with Silent Spring, this course explores how women writers have contributed to the network of discourses that go under the name of ecology. We will consider short stories, science fiction novels, essays, and films by and about women, noting how environmental concerns intersect with those of other closely-related fields, including animal studies, food studies, and queer studies. Among authors to be considered are Naomi Mitchison (Memoirs of a Spacewoman), Kate Wilhelm (Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang), Sandra Steingraber (Living Downstream), Vandana Shiva (Biopiracy), Suzie McKee Charnas (The Vampire Tapestry) and Octavia Butler (Parable of the Sower), along with ecofeminist film makers, such as Kelly Reichardt.
