Section Title:
Data Analysis for Geosciences
Section Info:
This course provides students with basic data analysis, quantitative and computer skills increasingly necessary in geoscience careers, and in many other career paths. The course will familiarize the student with department and university analytic resources, and with a variety data sources available on the web. The focus will be on working on geoscience problems directly applicable to coursese and research in the department. Specific topics covered include: describing and comparing sample populations, simple data manipulations, data visualization, surface contouring and modeling, distributions, exponential behavior, analysis of remotely sensed data, graphic data representation. We will start off with randomness and probability testing, and finish up by touching on fractal geometries, regressions, spectral analysis, spatial analysis and kriging.
