Ferguson and Beyond: Race, Space, and the Police in 21st Century America | *Location: IPRH Lecture Hall - Levis Faculty Center, 4th Floor* | This course is intended for undergraduate students in any University of Illinois major who seek to understand the events that unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri during the late fall and early winter of 2014. It takes as a starting point the shooting of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, the subsequent Grand Jury decision not to indict Officer Wilson, and the protests, riots, and civil disturbances that followed that decision in Ferguson and nationwide. To some extent, 'Ferguson' will be used as shorthand in this course for an exploration of the past, present, and future of racialized marginalization and oppression as it is played out in U.S. cities and suburbs. As such, we will explore issues related to the dynamics of policing, spatial segregation, racism, and social/economic oppression. The course is intentionally multi-disciplinary. Organized by professors from multiple departments, it will also include guest lectures from a range of scholars with expertise pertaining to the central issues of the course.
