Provides students with the physical study of various world dance forms. Topics reflect specializations of faculty, such as Capoiera, African dance, Balinese dance, and Chinese forms.

Dances of West Africa is a survey course in neo-traditional African dance. Using the rituals, protocol, and class structure of Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique, students will be exposed to three West African dances that originate from the Old Mali Empire.

Umfundalai is a contemporary African dance technique that comprises its movement vocabulary from dance traditions from the continent of Africa as well as societies throughout the Diaspora. Contemporary African Dance uses Umfundalai to provide students with a rigorous movement experience that will focus on alignment, rhythm, and style as competencies in proficient, African-informed movement practice.
