Black Lives Matter: Human Righ
Section Info:
This course examines the various ways that the ideals, norms, legalities, and politics of human rights have been critically engaged in the experiences of African Americans and other African descendants in the global African diaspora. The current crisis in the United States related to racial profiling, extrajudicial killings, and mass incarceration will be placed in historical perspective and transnational context to interrogate various predicaments around the world where interlocking racial, class, and gendered disparities are implicated but differently configured in light of variations in cultural logics, geopolitical trajectories, and patterns of economic development. The course will explore how proponents of racial justice have actively participated in defining, interpreting, and deploying international norms for human rights as a dimension of the struggle against black subjugation in its multiple modalities, both flagrant and subtle.
