RST 199SS: Sport and Sustainability / MLB Green Team Initiative Online Course (2 credits Summer II - WITHOUT TRIP) An online course examining the environmental, social and economic impacts of sustainable development practices in the context of Sport organizations. Students will be exposed to sustainability models being embraced by leagues and teams to increase revenues and reduce costs; analyze strategies managers implement to raise community awareness of social issues; and have the opportunity to demonstrate customer service and event operations skills as a member of the ?Green Team Initiative? at the 2014 Major League All Star Game Festivities (July 11-July 16) in Minneapolis, MN. Students intending to participate as a volunteer at the 2014 MLB All Star Festivities (includes Home Run Derby, Concert, Celebrity Soft Ball Game, and All Star Game) should register for RST 199SS, section A (3 credit hours). A $200 course fee will be assessed to cover room and board from July 11-July 16. Students will be expected to cover personal travel costs to arrive on site in Minneapolis. Students who do not wish to attend the 2014 MLB All Star Festivities should register for RST 199SS, section B (2 credit hours). Section Info:
Students will learn the principles of sales and promotion as they relate to recreation, sport and tourism. Techniques for setting sales objectives, communicating with clients, and promotion of programming, events and facilities will be discussed. Students will also learn the stages of the sales communication cycle and best-practices on how to develop a client base.
