African American Rhetoric: Revolution, Resistance & Transformation Course Description: We will explore how African Americans carved out a space for revolution, resistance, and transformation using speeches, protests, and music in their quest for social change while also shaping Black social and political thought in the United States. The objective of this upper division course is to understand how members of disenfranchised communities have used symbols to construct images of themselves and their communities. Together, we will interrogate how African Americans carved out a space for revolution, resistance, and transformation in their quest for social change while also shaping Black social and political thought in the United States. Students will examine readings, speeches and other artifacts that not only impacted the lives of African Americans, but of all Americans and the Black Diaspora. Examples of materials to be explored include speeches by W.E.B DuBois, Marcus Garvey, Hosea Hudson, Claudia Jones, Bayard Rustin, SNCC, Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Audre Lorde, and Harold Washington.
