The Plastic Brain: Insights from Deafness and Blindness. This course will use assigned readings and discussion to explore the role of sensory inputs in shaping brain structure and function. We will explore how congenital deafness and blindness leads to changes in visual and auditory functions, and relate those behavioral changes to unimodal and cross modal changes in brain function and connectivity.

Audiologists play an important role in the identification and management of individuals with vestibular disorders. The following topics are covered in the SHS 593 Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation class: anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system; common vestibular disorders and other causes of dizziness; bedside examination of the dizzy patient; administration and interpretation of vestibular tests including VNG and ENG; role of other medical professionals in the assessment and management of dizzy patients; vestibular rehabilitation. The course materials closely follow the assigned textbook.

Writing Dev&Disorder in Childr
Section Info:
This doctoral-level seminar will explore engagement in writing by children and youth, genres of children?s home and school writing, bridging from spoken to written language, and developmental progressions in writing. This information will be used to consider aspects of writing that are difficult for children and youth with histories of spoken language impairment. Evidence-based assessment and intervention for such writing difficulties will be investigated, including resources to assist in writing mechanics, composition, and self-expression (i.e., how, what, and why children write). Emphasis will be placed on invited speakers from different disciplines that investigate writing and on the development of research designs to study children?s language and writing.
