Microscopic statistical treatment of the structure and dynamics of polymers, colloids, gels, and other soft materials. Fundamental connections between molecular architecture, intermolecular forces, collective fluid structure, and time-dependent phenomena; Brownian motion, Langevin equation theory, and viscoelasticity; diffusion in colloidal suspensions, gels, and glasses; dynamics of polymer solutions and melts.

Prerequisite: MSE 401.
