Movie Spectacle
Section Info:
Registration opened to juniors and seniors throughout campus on November 15 at 11:00 am. Rather than the typical movie critic's criteria of value around a "good story well told," with "believable characters" and "convincing acting," this class will examine the "extra-narrative" or what some have called the "excessive" elements of the movies. These will include action, emotion, the body in motion, the star treatment, etc.; as spectacle, in order to explore these facets as vital to a particular movie's appeal, or to the cinema as an institution. Movies will include those by Wong Kar Wai, Paul Verhoeven, John Woo, Todd Haynes, Kathryn Bigelow, and/or Gaspar Noe. Readings will include Dyer, Debord, Baudrillard, Elsaesser, Gunning, Thompson, and Elsaesser.
