Topic: Reading Subaltern Studies. Description: In this course, we will read the major works of scholars in the Subaltern School of History. The subaltern scholars' texts we shall read focus on peasant and labour histories, histories of anti-colonial nationalism, and on the philosophy and production of knowledge. In many ways, the course is an intellectual history of the Subaltern school of the thought. We will consider the emergence and evolution of the Subaltern school within the practices of South Asian history writing, and the impact of this school of thought on the historiography of other regions, particularly Latin America.
