What are the effects of income inequality on democracy? In an era of economic crises and growing income inequality throughout the world, answers to this question could have serious political and social implications. This course will take an expansive view to answer this question by exploring the ways in which economic inequality may matter for the birth and survival of democracies. Specifically, the course will examine how inequality affects participation, political attitudes, and citizens? general wellbeing.

Current Conflict on the Mexico-U.S. Border. This seminar explores the complex problems and on the ground struggles of the contemporary Mexico-U.S. borderlands. Undocumented migration, the militarization of border policing, the drug war, vigilantism, and other conflicts will be explored through critical scholarly interpretations, media, film and documentaries.
