Global Studies Career Development: The Internship Experience This course will emphasize connecting academic interests to field work opportunities (internships and service-learning). Students will work through a self-assessment of goals, skills and knowledge, and research internships/service opportunities that match their goals and strengths. Students will prepare application materials for specific opportunities, conduct informational interviews, participate in mock job interviews, explore networking strategies, and create a career narrative that represents their academic interests and skills. The course will also prepare students for what to expect with field work experiences and how to develop and apply leadership skills, such as taking initiative and teamwork, during the field experience.

This new course explores intersections of Chinese and American cultures, identity, and social justice issues on campus, national, and international levels. This global learning opportunity is designed to develop opportunities for cultural exchange and mutual learning dedicated to building stronger communities locally. In an effort to develop global leadership skills, students will engage in classroom discussions, and out-of-classroom cultural immersion experiences including a daytrip to Chicago's Chinatown.

Europe in Trouble
Section Info:
Europe in Trouble: European Politics, Society, and Culture since 1945. The course will focus on important societal, political, and cultural issues that shape discussions and debates in Europe today. It will seek to understand these debates in their historical contexts. The central thesis of this course is that the history of postwar Europe can be read as a series of crises, starting with the aftermath of World War II, but also including the revolutionary year 1968, the fall of the Wall, the war in Yugoslavia, etc. While the course focuses on important societal and political developments, it also argues that culture not only played an important role in the series of crises that constitute Europe?s postwar history, but also that cultural artifacts can function as an important resource for understanding the conflicts and debates that shaped the public debate in Europe since 1945. Format: 3 lectures per week; one film screening each week. Meets with: GER 199, GLBL 199 and EURO 199.
